India is not known for maintaining its heritage sites, and as a result these historical wonders are crumbling to pieces. Chicago-based journalist Victoria Lautman visited India ages ago and fell in love with our step-wells. She thought they were magnificent structures. Stepwells were built in India in the 2nd and 4th century AD. They were designed to access water tables in areas where water wasn't easily accessible. However, today, most of these wells have dried up and no one seems to be doing anything about it.
Lautman, in urgency, decided to do extensive research on these structures before they disappear. She spent a few years to find 120 structures across 7 states and the result is only phenomenal. Take a look at 12 pictures from her collection.
